Small Beach Ostend

The fact that populations are increasing is a positive message. In the recent past, seals were threatened by hunting, but also by pollution and disease.

Their breathing is remarkable. They breathe very slowly, which ultimately allows them to remain underwater for very long periods of time. A seal can sleep underwater, holding its breath for up to 20 minutes.
They store oxygen in their blood and body. When they’re not breathing, oxygen eventually enters their body through their muscles.

Seals are solitary hunters. Indeed, appearances can be deceiving. You usually find them in large groups on the beach or sandbanks, but they hunt alone. After each hunt, they always return to their usual resting place. Only during the first few weeks is the young cared for by its mother. After that, it is quickly abandoned by its mother, and the young are left to fend for themselves.
